About Occupational Therapy

Many people think that Occupational Therapists only help with issues related to your job.  However, Occupational Therapy is wellness focused and strives to solve the problems that interfere with your ability to do any of the activities in life that are important to you. It can also prevent a problem or minimize its impact on your life.

Occupational Therapists believe that occupations (or activities) describe who you are and how you feel about yourself. If you are unable to do the things you want to do or need to do, or are feeling uncertain about how to live and enjoy your life, your overall health and well-being may be affected.

Injury, physical or mental illness, disability, life stressors or life transitions may limit your ability to:

  • take care of yourself;
  • take care of loved ones;
  • participate in paid or unpaid work;
  • complete home and family responsibilities;
  • complete school work;
  • engage in leisure activities;
  • interact with your family, friends or community.

Occupational Therapy can offer unique and creative solutions and strategies to help overcome physical, cognitive, motivational or emotional barriers that are interfering with your life.

Examples of interventions include;

  • Cognitive Assessment and Rehabilitation (following concussion/brain injury);
  • Depression Management;
  • Anxiety Management
  • Pain Management;
  • Stress Management Education;
  • Managing Intense Emotions
  • Coping through Life Transitions
  • Progressive Goal Setting;
  • Ergonomic Evaluations;
  • Home Safety Assessments;
  • Equipment Recommendations

OT is the perfect blend of mental, emotional and physical care for individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, brain injury, stress and stress-induced illness, PTSD, pain management, and those undergoing major life transitions such as retirement, change in career, change in lifestyle (ie. starting university or moving to a new city), and parenthood.
